Planned Bloodlines

Happy, Healthy, True-to-Type Chow Chows

Breeding is planned for the greatest probability of happy and healthy puppies. Our priorities are Temperament, Health and Type, in that order.

We work on the theory that if a dog has a poor temperament, it may not survive long enough to evidence any health problems. Our focus is on calm, stable and strongly instinctual dogs – easy to adapt and difficult to rattle. We ensure the potential but depend on new owners to provide sufficient social opportunities to grow it.

The greatest temperament in the world relies on good health for proper expression. Chow Chows, being a primitive breed, are particularly stoic and may not display any but the most severe pain. Sometimes regarded as a lazy breed, owners may not be aware of the extent of suffering. Other disabilities have a direct and immediate impact on every aspect of daily lives. We carefully research pedigrees for genetic load, matching parents to strengthen good points and compensate for weaker points. All to ensure that dogs have the greatest possible potential for living a full, active and fulfilled life.

Assuming that the dog is happy, fit and active, it needs to embody the true likeness of Chow. We work according to the breed standard to meet the ancient ideal of a square, powerful, active dog. We particularly eschew exaggerations – overly heavy bone, short legs, flattened snouts, excess wrinkles, droopy eyes and jowls!

All in all, it takes years of study, research, analysis and real flesh-and-blood puppies to establish true type breeding lines. It costs a lot of time, effort, money and discipline to achieve long term breeding goals. In the meantime, Mishna works together with selected other breeders to advance our collective goal of preserving an ancient heritage for future generations.
