Working with Rescue Chow Chows
in the Western Cape

It is our philosophy that owning a Chow Chow should be a privilege. And, conversely, that every Chow Chow deserves the protection, honour and respect due such noble creatures. At Mishna Chow Chows we are committed to helping wherever we become aware of a need - through education, awareness, training and rehabilitation - and through support for the many remarkable people and organisations who strive to make a difference in the lives of Chow Chows everywhere.

Read the story of our work with a family of abandoned Chow Chows at Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre during the summer of 2011/12.

Apparently in America each of the 185 AKC registered breeds and varieties is represented by a member club devoted solely to the welfare and improvement of that breed, and every one of them engages in breed rescue. (1)

In South Africa, however, there is no official Chow Chow representative or rescue organization. The Chow Chow Club of Gauteng is currently the only remaining representative of the breed standard at the national Kennel Union registry. It supports only the welfare of dogs owned by active members able to prove KUSA registration status, automatically excluding the pure-bred and possibly pedigreed dogs which enter the welfare system when owners are unknown or unidentified.

The volunteer group Chow Chow Africa, in the absence of a local breed representative body, provides the most comprehensive general information and rescue service. Although not an official breed rescue, it assists in the communication, advertisement and resolution of welfare cases from legitimate welfare organisations. Queries may be addressed directly to info@chowchows.za.org.
