A Lifetime in Chow Chows

Chow Chows have been in our family for five generations, across three centuries:

- great grandmother, Charlotte, owned, bred and exhibited Chow Chows in London from the late 1800s;

- grandmother, Doreen, brought Chow Chows to South Africa and established prestigious breeding lines over more than fifty years;

- mother, Ethwyn, lived with Chow Chows all her life;

- myself, Vanessa, have never been without a Chow Chow - I live with them, study & work with them, and occassionally breed & exhibit them;

- my son, Benjamin, has been raised to live and work with Chow Chows, and he carries with him into adulthood a deep love for the breed. Read his thoughts on Raising Golda, the first Chow Chow of his own!

As a teenager, I shared my grandmother's great Chow passion and spent many hours working in her kennels and listening to her stories. She was a strong, dynamic woman, very English, very eccentric and very constrained by the entrenched sexism of her generation. I was an "odd" child, fluent in Chow but an alien among human beings. As an adult I have "learned" people, but retained an abiding passion for and commitment to my "original" Chow Chow family.

I remain loyal to the original Chow Chow type with which I grew up and bonded during the 1960s, the breed established in the East over many, many thousands of years.

The second half of the twentieth century produced some monster exaggerations, as dissimilar to the original type in temperament and spirit as they were physically, hybrids established in the West over just a few decades.

In recent years, however, the international shift to more conservative and mindful improvement of the breed while remaining true to original type seems, thankfully, to be appeasing some of these concerns.

As an adult I have been fortunate enough to share my passion for Chow Chows with many friends and mentors. Share some of our stories for old-timer wisdom, fascinating anecdotes and alternative perspectives.

The Chow Chow is a creature of much legend and mystery and it attracts much speculation. But mere repetition does not create fact. I am committed to unravelling Chow fact from fiction, applying my obsessive compulsive analytical skills to the fields of anthropology, palaeontology, archeology, zoology, and ethology to get beyond popular folktales. Share some of our learnings!

I am dedicated to ensuring quality of life for all Chows through education, advocacy, social pack work and work with rescue Chows and new Chow placements. Drawing on more than twenty years experience working as a dog trainer, and a lifetime in Chows, I occasionally also provide chow behavioural consultation.
